The story of Henry Esmond, a colonel in the service of Queen Anne of England, begins in his youth, as the illegitimate and orphaned cousin of the Viscount and Lady of Castlewood. The Jacobite family gradually embraces Henry as one of their own. When Henry comes of age he joins the campaign to restore James Stuart to the throne, but is eventually forced to accept the Protestant future of England. Followed by "The Virginians".

This would be about the most confusing book I've ever read. It reads like a first draft. It was difficult to figure out who the narrator actually was as it kept jumping from different points of view without warning - even in mid paragraph! Great long explanations of battles had me completely mystified. I appreciated the Kindle's button that let me flick through endless pages of explanation about who was the villain of the piece and why. I was previously unclear on this period of English history (early 18th century) and will remain so. I've read other Thackeray novels and thought them quite charming, but this one has to be a thumb's down.Product details

The History of Henry Esmond Esq edition by William Makepeace Thackeray Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Excellent Book, it has encouraged me to read more about the reign of Queen Anne. It has given me an understanding of the Jacobite cause.
this is a large format reprint. unless you like reading letter-size novels don't buy this terrible reprint.
Although this **would** be a good edition of the novel, PLEASE NOTE THAT THE BOOK CONTAINS ONLY VOLUME 2 (THE SECOND HALF OF THE NOVEL). VOLUME 1 IS NOT AVAILABLE. I have no explanation for this except that the publisher made a ridiculous error, and I cannot believe that no one has called them out on it. I and the rest of my graduate class have tried to contact the publisher to complain, but you cannot even get a hold of them. DO NOT BUY IF YOU WANT TO READ THE WHOLE BOOK!!!!!!!
Thackeray is one of my favorite authors of historical fiction. He has great humorous insights into life. Vanity Fair is my favorite but Henry Esmond comes close.
My imagination was captured from the first page. A book in a beautiful old style, with depth of feeling, and an exciting plot; and with a refreshing honesty and blunt style that I did not expect. Thackeray is now one of my favorites. For anyone who has read and enjoyed Oscar Wilde, I recommend Henry Esmond! And for anyone who hasn't, I recommend Henry Esmond!
Henry Esmond is among my favorite novels. Thackery brings major historical issues into his plot -- and deep psycholgical insight into his characters. Recommend
Did you know that the term crib was used to refer to a bedroom/apartment in the mid-19 century? The book can be lengthy and filled with Victorian sentimentality but it also gives an interesting overview of what life may have been like for a privileged up and coming young professional male of the middle class.
